Open the airway. With the person lying on his or her back, tilt the head back slightly to lift the chin. Check for breathing. Listen carefully, for no more than 10 seconds, for sounds of breathing.
Occasional gasping sounds do not equate to breathing. If there is no breathing begin CPR. Push hard, push fast. Place your hands, one on top of the other, in the middle of the chest.
Use your body weight to help you administer compressions that are at least 2 inches deep and delivered at a rate of at least compressions per minute. Deliver rescue breaths. With the person's head tilted back slightly and the chin lifted, pinch the nose shut and place your mouth over the person's mouth to make a complete seal. Blow into the person's mouth to make the chest rise.
CPR on adults If you have been trained in CPR, including rescue breaths, and feel confident using your skills, you should give chest compressions with rescue breaths. If you're not completely confident, attempt hands-only CPR instead. Hands-only CPR To carry out a chest compression: Place the heel of your hand on the breastbone at the centre of the person's chest. Place your other hand on top of your first hand and interlock your fingers.
Position yourself with your shoulders above your hands. Using your body weight not just your arms , press straight down by 5 to 6cm 2 to 2. Keeping your hands on their chest, release the compression and allow the chest to return to its original position.
Repeat these compressions at a rate of to times a minute until an ambulance arrives or you become exhausted. People often use these two terms interchangeably. Cardiac arrest is when the heart stops correctly receiving electrical impulse signals to beat. A heart attack is the result of restricted or blocked blood flow to the heart. If a person has a heart attack, do not perform CPR unless that individual goes into cardiac arrest. Deciding to stop CPR is something that has to be determined on a case by case basis.
