What makes me unphotogenic

Why is it that some people look fantastic in photos while others, who look fine in real life, look terrible in photos? My friend Anna is the perfect example of the former. She looks good in every single picture. Of course, she is always the first to whip out her mobile phone for a happy snap at our get-togethers.

I can only assume she spends hours in front of her mirror practising her pose. At least that's what I tell myself to feel better. Unfortunately, my husband suffers the same curse as me.

He is a handsome man in real life, but an entirely different creature in photos. This means that neither of us is quick to pull out the camera and take pictures that include us. We take photos of the kids, but we don't like to get in there and ruin the shot.

I fear that if I ever go missing, there would not be one decent photo for my husband to give the police and media. Most people fall around average-looking. Also, depending on the camera angle and how close the lens is to you , cameras can distort your features so — for instance — your nose or arm looks bigger than it really is. Pictures can also catch you in action , capturing a split-second ugly expression that no one would have ever noticed in person.

You ' re Not Using Your Eyes to Your Advantage Our transformation into photogenic women can largely be boiled down to one word: squinching. Style Me Grasie. Where Did U Get That. However, for most people who hate having their photo taken, even if everyone else is telling them they look amazing in a photo, they're often more distracted by the fact the image isn't the familiar version of them.

This is called the 'mere-exposure effect' and if you really want to get into the science of it, click here to read about it. The answer of course is simple, and also anathema to the camera shy - it's to start getting used to the you in photos, so that you become more familiar to yourself, and thus eliminate that feeling of thinking you look weirdly different in photos.

By the way - when you're taking a selfie, and I know that's probably rare in the first place, often your phone will show you a mirror image on the screen, but the photo when saved will be flipped back - so if you've ever been confused as to why you thought you looked better on the screen than in the photo, this could be why! Maybe try taking some photos of yourself or get someone else to and flipping them to a reverse image - see which you prefer and let me know.

Much love, Anna xx PS - want to read more about how we make ourselves appear unphotogenic? Click here!
